ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

  • The Department of Tamil started in the year 1955. It started functioning as a part –l Tamil Department
  • Department had in its history such a great and eminent personalities  who had let the Department in a right perspective by sacrificing their lives for the growth and the development of this great and esteemed Institution which caters the needs of the poor and marginalized section of the society
  • In the year 2001-2002 Tamil Department obtained  permission from the Management to start Tamil PG course (M.A Tamil)
  • In the year 2005-2006 the Department had another breakthrough in the field of Higher Education of starting Full Time M.Phil and Ph.D., Research Programmes. Therefore the Department started functioning as a full-fledged Research Department. The Department also offers Part Time Ph.D., to the Research scholars from 2001 onwards. We have produced number of outstanding scholars through this Research Department
  • Management gave permission again to start UG course in Tamil (B.A Tamil Lit.,) in the year 2007-2008
  • Tamil Department in A.V.C.  is the only department in Tamil Nadu which has got 12 lakhs for the endowment programme in the name of ‘Srilosani Varatharan’.  This is one among the 18 endowments in the Department.  Out of which 14 endowments are created by our staff and 3 endowments are created by out Alumni of A.V.C. and one is created by a well-wisher of ‘Srilosani Varathan’ wroth of 12 lakhs. 16 endowments contribute for the academic awards and 2 for the department seminars
  • Piratical oriented papers are introduced in our department from 2001 onwards

Library:

        In the library there are 9950 books are available. In the department library 838 books are available and all of them are gifted books. There are 23 Journals out of which 19 magazines are monthly and 4 are quarterly. We have books in good collections in the library which are used by our students to the maximum.

INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULUM:

  • The Curriculum of the Department incorporates higher values like Patriotism and Cosmopolitism in religion language Race and caste, Personal and public morality, ethical values and concepts on the evolution of various literary forms.

  • Patriotic Poems from the poetical canon of the Bharathi and Bharthidasan’s poems were introduced in the syllabus of Part-I Tamil.

  • When the students study Part-I Tamil, The great poet M.Metha’s book “Manamey kovil manidhaney deivam” (The Heart is the Temple and Man is the God) is taught to students and we believe this will foster religious harmony.

  • In order to bring social awareness among the students ‘poetical words’ titled “Irumbadikkum Rojakkal” of Vairamuthu is included in the syllabus of Part-I Tamil. Such works expose the students to the problems related to child labor.

  • The same kind of thrust also is given in the UG (B.A Tamil) classes.

  • With the view of promoting religious harmony, a separate paper on religious philosophy is included in the syllabus of PG Tamil. This paper will have the religious philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity and Islam. Selected portions from literary works from Thembavani, Seerappuranam are included in this paper.

  • To increase the employability of PG students, papers on journalism and creative writing & editing are included in the syllabus of M.A Tamil.

  • For the Competitive Examination like IAS, IPS and EDC paper for the PG students has been introduced. There is very good reception to this paper by the students

  • The class room teaching is supplemented with the audio and video CDs and transparencies displayed through OHP. The Department has acquired two computers, laser printers and Audio and Video system.
