INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULUM:
The Curriculum of the Department incorporates higher values like Patriotism and Cosmopolitism in religion language Race and caste, Personal and public morality, ethical values and concepts on the evolution of various literary forms.
Patriotic Poems from the poetical canon of the Bharathi and Bharthidasan’s poems were introduced in the syllabus of Part-I Tamil.
When the students study Part-I Tamil, The great poet M.Metha’s book “Manamey kovil manidhaney deivam” (The Heart is the Temple and Man is the God) is taught to students and we believe this will foster religious harmony.
In order to bring social awareness among the students ‘poetical words’ titled “Irumbadikkum Rojakkal” of Vairamuthu is included in the syllabus of Part-I Tamil. Such works expose the students to the problems related to child labor.
The same kind of thrust also is given in the UG (B.A Tamil) classes.
With the view of promoting religious harmony, a separate paper on religious philosophy is included in the syllabus of PG Tamil. This paper will have the religious philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity and Islam. Selected portions from literary works from Thembavani, Seerappuranam are included in this paper.
To increase the employability of PG students, papers on journalism and creative writing & editing are included in the syllabus of M.A Tamil.
For the Competitive Examination like IAS, IPS and EDC paper for the PG students has been introduced. There is very good reception to this paper by the students
The class room teaching is supplemented with the audio and video CDs and transparencies displayed through OHP. The Department has acquired two computers, laser printers and Audio and Video system.
