The Department was offering Physics at the Pre University Course and ancillary level from 1956 to 1964.The University of Madras granted affiliation to start B. Sc., Physics course in the academic year 1964 – 65. Later affiliated with Bharathidasan University,Evening section of B.Sc., Physics was started in the year 1986 exclusively for women students. In 2007 M.Sc., Physics was started in Evening Section. Elevated as research department in 2014-15.

NEWTON BONDS – Students Forum “Newton Bonds “- Students Forum was launched in the academic year 2018-19. The forum involves activities such as Student Lecture Programme, Quiz, Essay writing, Elocution, Group discussion etc., to enrich the students activity inspite of their academic curriculum. It also encourages the students to compete various aspects of competitive world and enhances to approach the modern, innovative trends of Science.
