CURRICULUM

The Department of English realizes the tremendous responsibility that rests on it, for language is no more a vehicle for thought. It is the most useful ‘library language’ and a significant window to the world. In modern professional organization , a great deal of importance is attached to the communication skill in English. It empowers and confers a better position on the user both socially and economically.  Hence the need of the hour is to strengthen the linguistic skills –both cognitive and practical. With this in mind,  the content of the courses are periodically revised in the Board of Studies Meeting.

Facilities in the Department

1. Books in the library

The Department has 6241 books on stacks.  In the last Five years 1053 have been added. Each member of the staff is provided 15 borrowers’ tickets  and each student  two tickets. The library is kept open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

3. Question Bank

    Objective type Questions with Key are prepared for Section –A from all the Units of the papers under Part II, Major and Allied Courses. They help the students understand their subjects in depth. They can take photocopies of these questions. It is very useful to them in preparing for examination. The students who are preparing for NET / SLET/ TET Examinations find it very handy as a resource material.

4. Digital Language Laboratory

      The Department has up-to-date computer facility. There are Fifteen computers connected through LAN  in theDigital Language Laboratory.   The configuration in the computers are :  Core II Duo Processor, 1 GB RAM and  160 GB Hard Disk. A student friendly special software called Clarity  Snet V7.0 developed by the Young India Films Limited  is installed in the Lab. The students could listen to English phonemes, words with proper stress and sentences with appropriate intonation and tone group. Later they could record and listen to their own voice  and improve  their level of standard. They are exposed to standard English with all Supra-segmental features and Received Pronunciation (RP).  They could also listen to English speeches, News Bulletins, live conversations, etc which will motivate  them to overcome their inhibition in communication.

5. Audio – Visual Room

      The Department has a LCD  T.V. ,a DVD Player and an Amplifier.  Shakespearean plays and other literary films are regularly screened to enhance the students’ understanding of literature. A LCD Projector is available in the Department. Lessons are prepared  and presented through Power Point Presentations  to make the class room teaching more alive.  A better comprehension is achieved helping the students take down important hints.  A Waist Band with in-built Speaker is used to teach Phonetics in the large class rooms for an enhanced audibility.
