ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department was started in the year 1958 with the sole aim of providing facility for higher education to the wards of families in and around Mayiladuthurai, whose major profession is agriculture. The B.Sc., degree course in Chemistry was started in the year 1958. The evening section B.Sc., and M.Sc., courses were started in the year 1988 and 1991 respectively.

Our vision is to be a progressive Department that serves as a research centre for the plant sciences, by training graduates who will be leaders in botanical education and research, and to energize the public appreciation of plants and microbes.
MISSION:
Our mission is to discover and convey scientific knowledge about the biology of plants and to promote awareness and appreciation of the diverse and vibrant field of Botany.

B.Sc., Chemistry (Day & Evening)
Eligibility:A pass in +2 with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
M.Sc., Chemistry (Evening)
Eligibility:A pass in B.Sc., Chemistry
Ph.D., Chemistry
Eligibility:A post graduation with a minimum of 55% of marks
OBJECTIVES:
To educate the next generation of chemists with the capacity to solve real problems and provide leadership that can lead to the economic and social transformation
To impart sufficient qualitative/quantitative analytical and synthetic chemical knowledge and skills of the students
To impart transferable skills, abilities, and knowledge required in a wide range of careers in basic and applied research and development of the students
Association activities and Special Lectures
Every year special lectures were organized on the latest topics with the help of UGC, Management, COSIP and Science Association funds to improve the scientific knowledge.
Paper specialization
Horticulture and Herbal Medicine are being offered as Extra Disciplinary course for PG students.
Innovative curriculum
Choice Based credit system is being offered for both UG and PG Botany students.
Other Regular Activities
Six regional and Two State Level seminars were organized to enrich the student knowledge.
The department is involved in the Young Student Scientist Programme for the benefit of high school students and COSIP for college students.
Conducts Botanical Tour to various parts of our country to enrich the field knowledge of students. Also a Botanic garden is being maintained in the campus.
Extension Service Activities
Numbers of extension activities were organized every year in the areas like cultivation of edible mushroom and organic farming in surrounding Villages. Staff members are doing their service in association with Campus Diversity Initiative and Exnora.
