The Department of Botany is rendering the service for the rural and downtrodden people in and around Mayiladuthurai by imparting higher education in Botany since 1975. More than 1500 botany graduates have been passed out of this Department. Postgraduate course of Botany (Self -financing) was established in 1994. Ph.D programme was started in 2008. Research activities are carried out in the areas of Microbial Ecology, Mycology, Plant pathology, Medicinal plants and Tissue culture.

A pass in +2 with Botany, Zoology, Chemistry or Biology & chemistry as part III. Vocational stream (Agriculture with plant protection & plant production) are also eligible.

A post Graduation Degree in Botany with a minimum of 55% of Marks
The Department has well equipped research laboratories with all facilities to conduct research on Microbial Ecology, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Medicinal plants and Tissue culture. The UG and PG laboratories are furnished with modern granite work tables, washing facilities, wall fixed cub-boards and ultra modern teaching aids like LCD, IQ Board device and advanced microscopes such as Binocular stereo microscope, projection microscope and digi microscope. There are about 6000 books and Journals concerned with Botany are available in the Library.
Association activities and Special Lectures
Every year special lectures were organized on the latest topics with the help of UGC, Management, COSIP and Science Association funds to improve the scientific knowledge.
Paper specialization
Horticulture and Herbal Medicine are being offered as Extra Disciplinary course for PG students.
Innovative curriculum
Choice Based credit system is being offered for both UG and PG Botany students.
Other Regular Activities
Six regional and Two State Level seminars were organized to enrich the student knowledge.
The department is involved in the Young Student Scientist Programme for the benefit of high school students and COSIP for college students.
Conducts Botanical Tour to various parts of our country to enrich the field knowledge of students. Also a Botanic garden is being maintained in the campus.
Extension Service Activities
Numbers of extension activities were organized every year in the areas like cultivation of edible mushroom and organic farming in surrounding Villages. Staff members are doing their service in association with Campus Diversity Initiative and Exnora.
